Three CIS students win Broad Scholarships

Congratulations to CIS seniors Ryan Herbin (E. E. Waddell), Joshua Pyant (Vance), and David Rashidi (Garinger)!  In a surprise announcement on May 11, Ryan, Joshua, and David learned they were among 13 CMS students winning a collective $250,000 in scholarships to attend college from the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. Students attending two-year colleges will receive $5,000, and those attending four-year universities will receive $20,000. David plans to study engineering at N.C. State University; Ryan plans to attend Tuskegee University; and Joshua is headed to East Carolina University.

Broad Scholarship winners Joshua Pyant, David Rashidi, and Ryan Herbin.)CMS students received the scholarships because the district was a 2010 finalist for The Broad Prize, the nation’s largest education award honoring large urban districts that have demonstrated the greatest overall performance and improvement in student achievement, while reducing achievement gaps among income and ethnic groups.  Unlike many traditional scholarships that are awarded only to top-tier students, Broad Prize scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors who have a demonstrated record of improving their grades over the course of their high school career and have a financial need.

CIS Scholarships Reception

Communities In Schools held its own Scholarships Reception for all CIS college scholarship recipients and their parents on May 19.  More than $78,000 in scholarships was awarded to 70 CIS seniors, based on a combination of academic performance, need, and full participation in CIS activities. Many thanks to our generous scholarship donors, and congratulations to our graduating seniors headed to college!
