Focus on Teen-age Girls: CIS events provide direction, support

CIS held two events this spring targeted to teen girls, with the goal of providing an array of speakers and workshops addressing topics specifically for young women, from leadership skills training, self-empowerment skills, and building healthy relationships, to personal finances, the importance of education, goal-setting and planning for the future.

Ladies FirstOn April 2, the CIS High School team hosted “Ladies First: Diamonds & Pearls, a Teen Summit for Girls.” More than 200 female students from 11 CMS high schools attended to participate in workshops and hear keynote speaker Kemba Smith Pradia, whose personal story about poor choices she made in college clearly resonated with the young women. [Pradia fell in with the wrong crowd, dated a drug dealer, and ended up being sentenced to 24 years in prison for conspiracy to distribute crack cocaine. Her sentence was later commuted.]  Read more in this Charlotte Observer article and view some great photos in The Observer’s photo gallery.

R.I.S.E. Leadership TeamOn May 5, the CIS Safe Journey/APP team (teen parenting programs) held its second annual “R.I.S.E. Leadership Summit” (Reaching Individual Success through collective Efforts). The half day event included break-out sessions in the morning, followed by a luncheon and awards program. Recognized at the luncheon were the 13 members of the Safe Journey R.I.S.E. Leadership Team. Team members are selected at the beginning of the school year by their Safe Journey social workers, based on their leadership qualities or potential, and their commitment and participation in school and Safe Journey. Two graduating seniors on the Leadership Team, Maria Melo and Sunia Byers, each won a $1,000 scholarship for college – only one winner was supposed to be selected, but judges found it too difficult this year and pronounced a tie!
