Midwood High School
Christy Strait actually likes math now. "I used to hate math," said Christy. "But now I understand it so much better. I really kind of like it now that it makes more sense."
Christy, a ninth grader at Midwood High School, has CIS volunteer tutor Rebecca Sherck to thank for her new attitude towards math. Rebecca provided Christy with intensive tutoring in Algebra twice a week over a four-month period this past fall.
"I think math is something that many students struggle with, yet it's an important skill that's needed throughout life," said Rebecca. "I remember being a little surprised at how much I used math myself on a daily basis as an adult. I also enjoy tutoring because I enjoy helping my community and Midwood is in my neighborhood," she added.
Joe Rothenberg, CIS Site Coordinator at Midwood, says Rebecca is one very dedicated volunteer. "Check the volunteer log book and you'll see," said Rothenberg. "Rebecca is signed in faithfully, twice a week - at 7:00 a.m. She comes here to tutor before she goes to work. Her consistency and dedication to the students is fantastic."
And here's the best part of all: this past semester Christy pulled her Algebra grade up from a D to a C, and she had perfect attendance at school. We're pretty certain Rebecca Sherck was part of the equation!
