What We Do

School-Based Dropout Prevention

At each high school site we serve, the CIS “safety net” includes, but is not limited to:

  • Providing comprehensive case management and dropout prevention for 100 students
  • Working with school staff to monitor students' behavior/attendance/promotion/academic progress
  • Consulting with school guidance counselor to ensure new high school students are enrolled in appropriate courses to achieve career plan and support for other needs
  • Organizing staffings aimed at assessing needs, setting goals and strategizing around interventions for high school students
  • Coordinating volunteers and monitor mentors
  • Connecting families to community resources for basic needs and services
  • Planning and presenting Life Skills Workshops for students and parents
  • Providing ThinkCOLLEGE® and other scholarship opportunities for eligible students
  • Organizing Job and Career Shadowing for CIS students
  • Providing opportunities for CIS students to participate in the CPCC Summer Bridge Program and the Summer Youth employment with City and County
  • Providing college access and career readiness programming, which exposes students (and parents where applicable) to college tours, financial aid and scholarship information, SAT/ACT entrance exam preparation, the college application process, job shadowing and internship opportunities, career fairs, and much more
  • Coordinating with CIS’s Safe Journey/APP team to provide appropriate teen parenting services and other educational services/needs, if applicable
  • Providing opportunities for social development, cultural enrichment, experiential learning, and community service/service learning

High School Sites, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools served by CIS

At each middle school site we serve, the CIS “safety net” includes, but is not limited to:

  • Providing comprehensive case management and dropout prevention for 100 students
  • Working with school staff to monitor students' attendance/promotion/academic progress
  • Coordinating the CIS Kids To College® program designed to bring early awareness to the importance of higher education
  • Coordinating with local colleges to expose 6th grade students to college life through a unique six-session curriculum that combines hands-on activities with information on careers, and college life
  • Organizing and providing opportunities for 7th and 8th grade students to participate in college tours throughout the school year
  • Utilizing the CIS Kids To High School Program that introduces CIS enrolled 8th graders to high school life and academic requirements throughout the school year
  • Informing students of the career path choices available to them upon entering high school
  • Participating in Career Shadowing and Service Learning opportunities
  • Planning and organizing Student Leadership meetings that focus on developing and enhancing leadership skills

Middle School Sites, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools served by CIS

At each elementary school site we serve, the CIS “safety net” includes, but is not limited to

  • Providing case management and dropout prevention for students
  • Working with school staff to monitor students' attendance/promotion/academic progress
  • Participating in School Intervention Team meetings aimed at assessing students' needs
  • Participating with and serving as a resource for CMS/Juvenile Court-led Truancy Court
  • Identifying special needs and referring child/parents to outside agencies as appropriate for basic needs
  • Coordinating recognition programs for all enrolled students around academics, attendance and behavior
  • Coordinating and working with community partners to offer enrichment and resource opportunities
  • Developing relationships with varied human service agencies to enable coordinated delivery of services to students to address identified issues
  • Partnering with existing school volunteer coordinator to create additional volunteer roles and opportunities
  • Coordinating annual college and/or career awareness focus
  • Coordinating and/or supporting incentive and recognition programs
  • Offering opportunity for enrolled students to be involved in community service projects
