CIS Student Success Stories
CIS Graduate, Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology
Bill’s dedication and hard work regarding his education has finally paid off: he is now a student at Georgetown College in Kentucky on a full Presidential Scholarship. He is majoring in Biology and wants to become a cardiothoracic surgeon.
But the path to high school graduation and college wasn’t an easy one. Just after starting the ninth grade, Bill’s home life fell into disarray when both of his parents were deported back to their native Republic of Cameroon. Bill and his 19-year-old sister remained in the U.S., living on their own, so that they could continue their education. “For more than a year, I didn’t tell anyone what was happening,” said Bill. “Every time I would talk about it, I’d start crying.”
But at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology, Bill found support from Communities In Schools and Site Coordinator Tavia Tubbs, who provided extra counseling, academic guidance, and help with landing college scholarships. He credits CIS, Mrs. Tubbs, and several caring teachers with providing the stability and support he needed to excel in both academics and sports at Berry, which positioned him to win the Presidential Scholarship.
“Bill is an outstanding young man destined to do great things,” said Mrs. Tubbs. “He is excited about life and does not take any opportunity for granted. I’m glad that CIS could help him secure his future.”
